Spring 2022 Newsletter

Friends of Set Free Monterey Bay,

Happy Spring! We hope your year is off to a steadfast start. We have been taking great strides with our organization and are excited to update you on what we have been up to.

New Website!

Our website is new and improved! Some things to check out:

Under the “Get Involved” Tab is our new GIVE section. This is where community members and supporters like you can give to tangible needs SFMB has in real-time. It features our Amazon Wish List items which contribute to ongoing survivor support and our street outreach efforts.

We are looking for staff and interns! Visit the “Work with Us” tab to read about job opportunities and to apply.

SFMB Apparel! Click the SHOP tab and find our new SFMB t-shirts and hoodies for sale.

Survivor Support

SFMB is honored to be serving multiple local survivors with ongoing case management services and continuing our partnership with the Equine Healing Collaborative. Our clients receive weekly check-ins with our Program Coordinator, Ashley, who assists them in navigating system barriers and life’s challenges. They also attend weekly equine therapy through the EHC. We are so honored to be walking alongside these women as they pursue healing outside of the life of exploitation.

Car Search

Do you have a used vehicle you would like to donate to our organization? This urgent need would provide temporary safety and transportation to a survivor SFMB is currently supporting. We will gladly take cars in any condition, even those that need some extra TLC, and provide you with a full tax write-off donation receipt. Please contact ashley@setfreemontereybay.org if you have a vehicle that can meet this need.

House Update

We are continuing to work closely with survivors in our community who would benefit from our residential program. We are committed to our long-term vision to provide a residence that will house up to four residents, with access to open land to facilitate our restorative programming. However, we have an urgent need to provide safe housing to local survivors who could benefit from our in-patient services immediately, and we are open to accepting alternate options as we continue to search for a home that best fits our organizational needs.

We cannot achieve this milestone without your help. If you or someone you know has a residence available for rent or purchase, or if you are able to make a financial donation towards purchasing a property, please contact our Executive Director, Garreth, at garreth@setfreemontereybay.org.

Board Positions

SFMB is currently looking for individuals interested in joining our Board of Directors. If you are committed to SFMB's mission to assist human trafficking survivors and are interested in serving at the Board level, please send an inquiry to michaelg@setfreemonterybay.org.

Please take a minute to read the bios of our current board of directors by visiting the button below.

Volunteer Training

If you missed our Volunteer Training in February that's okay because it was a packed house! We are so grateful to those of you that were able to attend and look forward to supporting you as you go deeper into the volunteer process. If are interested in volunteering with our organization the next training will be held:

Thursday, June 2 from 6-7:30 pm

2511 Garden Rd. Suite A200, Monterey Ca, 93940

This in-person training will cover human trafficking 101, trauma-informed care and practices, and update trainees on what SFMB needs in terms of staff, volunteers, and tangible ways to serve. By attending you will be gifted a certificate of completion which allows you to work with our clients/residents for one year.

This training is for all who hope to one day work, volunteer, and be a part of our restoration program. This training is for service providers, class facilitators, mentors, and those that are curious and want to know more. We encourage you to come if you have a skill you would like to share with our ladies, are interested in running classes, mentorship/sponsorship, or want to learn more about our organization.

Education Update

SFMB had the privilege of educating 365 students this quarter including schools such as Trinity Christian, Everett Alvarez, and Pacific Coast Charter. Big shout out to our Vice President and Education Coordinator Felicia George for walking alongside our local youth to educate them on the issue of HT. If you would like SFMB to come to your student’s school please reach out to felicia@setfreemontereybay.org
